New Technique: 2-STEP Watercoloring

I was inspired by an amazing card on pinterest by a altenewblog.com that I wanted to try to recreate they layout using the Stampin’ Up! set “Oh So Succulent” from the 2017 Occasions Catalogue.

Oh So Succulent is a 2-step stamp, meaning that there are at least 2 stamps that layer over top of one another to get a layered and textured look.  I wanted to get the layered look of the card I saw on altenewblog.com, in the least amount of steps possible, so I let the 2-step stamps do the work:

Here’s how to accomplish this effect:

  1. Use your watercolour pencils to make a watercolour wash on the background.  Allow to dry.
  2. Stamp the outline stamps of the succulents.  Because these are photopolymer, I was able to eyeball them to line them up without creating a mask.
  3. Stamp the 2-stamp solid layer so that the succulents are filled in with colour.
  4. Use watercolour pencils by Stampin’ Up! to add the shadow layers and the purple tips.
  5. Fill in the highlights using a Uniglo Gel pen.

Fun hey?!

Here’s a video to show you the steps in action:

I saw another succulent card on cruizinkellster.blogspot.com that looked incredible.  She coloured her card with copics but I knew that this same technique would work with the Stampin’ Up! set from the Annual Catalogue, Live, Love, Grow:

The Basket Builder framelits came in really handy to make a pot for the succulents!
